我坐而守望
我坐而守望这世界上的一切悲伤，守望一切的压迫和羞耻，
我听见年轻小伙悄悄抽搐啜泣，痛恨着自己，为自己做下的事情悔恨不已，
我看到在生活在底层的母亲遭受着自己孩子的虐待，奄奄一息、无人顾念、憔悴、绝望，
我看到受着丈夫虐待的妻子，我看到诱骗年轻妇人的背信的骗子，
我记下了企图掩饰的由嫉妒和单恋生出的的怨恨，我看着这些场景在大地上出现，
我看到战争、瘟疫、独裁制造的成果，我看到烈士与囚徒，
我留意注视那一次海上的断粮，我留意注视那些掷筹抽签的水手，他们要决定谁将被杀死以便让其他人活下，
我留意注视那些傲慢自大的人投于劳工、穷人，还有黑人以及诸如此类之人的轻蔑和贬低，
所有的这些啊——所有的卑劣和苦痛，无边无际，我坐而守望，
看，听，并且默然。

I see the wife misused by her husband, I see the treacherous seducer of young women,
I mark the ranklings of jealousy and unrequited love attempted to be hid, I see these sights on the earth, I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny, I see martyrs and prisoners,
I observe a famine at sea, I observe the sailors casting lots who shall be kill'd to preserve the lives of the rest,
I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like;
All these —— all the meanness and agony without end I sitting look out upon,
See, hear, and am silent.

Till o'er the river pois'd, the twain yet one, a moment's lull,
A motionless still balance in the air, then parting, talons loosing,
Upward again on slow-firm pinions slanting, their separate diverse flight,
She hers, he his, pursuing.
