Last week, entertainment writer Logan Hill spoke to the Sitting Around Talking Movies podcast about his recent visit into the STAR TREK BEYOND editing offices, where he met with director Justin Lin and saw some of the work the editing team is doing on the upcoming film.
One of the more interesting points is how much time Lin is pouring into the next Trek film, spending most of every weekday on the project.

Justin Lin works really fast. He's got a reputation in the business [as a director] who can turn massive projects around very, very quickly. He works from nine in the morning to two AM in the [editing] office, five days a week. Dude doesn't sleep.
I've talked to actors who've been on set with him and they said that he would show up on set, he'd film all day – and at nine o'clock everybody'd go out to dinner, [but Lin] would go into the editing bay and sleep. He's one of these guys that does REM cycle sleep, so he either sleeps an hour and a half or three hours a night, never more when he's on set.
He'd be editing [that day's] sequences every night to make sure he got what he needed… He would stay up all night editing because if you don't get [any needed] stuff the next day - with a cast like that that's so big and has so many missing parts - you miss it.

[Lin] likes to have a lot of things going on, so he splits his team up and have in three or four different rooms working on different scene visually; three or four rooms working on the sound... they had a rough cut set.
He is such a meticulous guy that he is getting in there, looking at the thrusters on the back of the Enterprise and saying, "The housing on that thruster looks too old-fashioned, it's too rigid, can we smooth it out?"
I also saw some stuff that was in the early stages of designing ships and things. Like, when you'd see those big scenes of a city, they design every single ship, saying things like, "Oh, that's not going to contrast great, that grey ship isn't going to [show] against the grey background. Let's change the color."

You know, any time you go to a set like this, obviously they're trying to show their best stuff, since you're only there for a day, so I'm not seeing the messiest [unfinished effects].
I saw some stuff that was nearly finished, that looked spectacular.
林诣彬喜欢让自己处于忙碌之中，所以他和他的团队是分开工作的，有三到四个房间是为不同场景的视效制作准备，有三到四个房间是为音效制作准备......剪辑工作非常艰巨。
他也是一个一丝不苟的家伙，当他到了片场，看到进取号后方的推进器的时候，他说：“推进器上的护罩看上去太旧式了，我们能去掉它吗？”
我同时也看到了一些电影早期阶段的设计，飞船以及其他的部分。就像当你看到一座城市那些宏伟的景象时，每个细节都是经过设计的。可以类比灰色的飞船并不会在灰色的背景板上绽放异彩，它必须经过上色处理。
任何时候你去片场，他们显然都在尽自己最大的努力工作，因为我只去了一天，所以我没有看到那些电影未完成的后期制作部分。

Director Justin Lin grew up watching the original Star Trek and always wondered about the lives of the Enterprise folks outside of Captain Kirk, and his new film explores those kinds of moments when the crew becomes separated from Kirk (Chris Pine) when stranded on an alien planet. Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Bones (Karl Urban), two guys who’ve been sitting on the captain’s shoulders, share an adventure, and Scotty (Simon Pegg) runs into Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), a member of a new alien species.
“Kirk and Spock is the heart of the ensemble, but we all have love for everybody else,” Lin says. “It was to be able to not only showcase these characters but also to be able to push them and interact and react to certain obstacles.”

To celebrate the moment when Humans and Vulcans made first contact (April 5, 2063), thought I’d share a photo from the first day of the STAR TREK BEYOND shoot. Here I am hanging with two of my favorite people to ever work with.
And just for fun, I’ll send the first person who correctly guesses the identities of these two actors an official STB crew t-shirt and signed STB poster.
Just leave your guesses in the comments section below.
And a small note—because the shirt contains spoilers for the film and the poster hasn’t been finalized yet, I won’t be able to send it out until closer to the STB release date this July, but rest assured you’ll get it as soon as possible.
I know this will probably be a tough one since the casting of these two actors hasn’t been announced yet and you won’t find them listed on IMDb.
So here’s a hint–I’ve worked with them both before STB. Good luck.

在星际迷航系列中饰演老骨头的Karl Urban在珀斯漫展讲述了星际迷航:超越星辰片场的乌龙事件，不由让人想起星际迷航：暗黑无界片场的中子霜恶作剧，不过重点是，这次他们并没有成功，而且差点玩脱了。

At the Karl Urban panel he was asked about pranks on the Start Trek set(considering the infamous Neutron Cream from Into the Darkness.)
The big one this time wasn't so much as a prank, as a stunt gone wrong.Karl had been down in LA doing something for a couple of weeks for the film.When he got back to Vancouver Simon Pegg and Chris Pine pounced on him aboutnot responding to the Dub Smash videos they had sent him.
Apparently the boys had been dub-smashing left and right and sending itthrough to Karl and expecting him to return the joke.
Karl said he had no idea what they were talking about. Pegg argued he wastaking the piss, but then it suddenly started to dawn on Mssrs Pine and Peggthat Karl REALLY didn't know what they were talking about.
"Pegg went white and asked what my number was"
Karl said, what do you think it is? Pegg replied, the number you had whenwe did Into the Darkness. OH says Karl, you mean the phone they gave me justfor the duration of the shoot?
Now Simon went VERY VERY white... because... when they were larking aboutdoing the dub-smash, they had been wearing their costumes... their very closelyguarded SECRET costumes... And now some random has just gotten hold of the maincast of Star Trek dancing around like fools in them...
They had to tell the producers... who were not impressed.
They apparently did track the guy down and begged him to delete theoffending texts.
I am assuming that whomever it wasprobably was involved in the film industry (ie it was a 'company phone) and haddone the right thing and just sat on it because we hasn't seen any leakedimages as far as I am aware.
Simon和Chris在温哥华片场拍摄电影的时候，Karl在洛杉矶忙别的事情，当他回到温哥华片场时，Simon和Chris质问他为什么不回复他俩给自己录的对口型假唱视频，Karl一脸懵逼，“你们在说啥？”

“他脸都吓白了，问我你的手机号是多少。”
Karl反问他，你把视频发到哪个手机号码上了？Simon告诉他了号码后Karl表示，你发的那个号是在拍摄暗黑无界的时候剧组给我的临时手机号啊......
Karl形容，Simon当时脸色变得惨白......因为这俩录对口型假唱的时候跳得就像两个傻子一样，而且是穿着电影的保密戏服......
于是他们告诉了制片人这件事，制片人表示很淡定。

剧组追踪到了那个手机号，请求手机号的主人删掉了那个视频。手机号归属是一个公司，而且万幸的是视频并没有流传出去，一张照片都没有。

Paramount Studios will kick off the studio presentations Monday night, bringing talent such as Will Arnett and Megan Fox from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
But all eyes will be on Star Trek Beyond, with producer J.J. Abrams and star/screenwriter Simon Pegg attending ahead of the July 22 release date.
"What they show at CinemaCon will be key," says Fandango.com managing editor Erik Davis. "Star Trek is Paramount's juggernaut."

2、林导觉得自己像是在拍摄一部大成本的粉丝电影。

3、电影中有向伦纳德·尼莫伊扮演的史波克致敬的内容。
Lin tackles one of the most controversial things seen in December's teaser trailer - the destruction of the Enterprise - head-on in the interview.
"I didn't come in saying 'Let's destroy.' It was more like, 'Let's deconstruct'... [Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, and I] felt that with this being the 50th anniversary of 'Star Trek', let's deconstruct it and hopefully rebuild it in a way that reaffirms why we've loved it for half a century. That conversation went a lot of different places, and one of the most interesting places was the Enterprise itself.
I remember watching it as a kid and saying, 'That's a cool-looking spaceship, but it looks really lanky. Is it built for combat?' It took me a while to realize that they're not out there to fight. It's an explorer's ship, so of course it looks like that."
Growing up watching Star Trek, Lin got the chance to realize some dreams about managing these characters:
"Bones is my favorite character, because I've always viewed him as the curmudgeonly uncle I never had. So it was fun to talk with Karl [Urban] about where McCoy is going and where he is right now. I almost feel like I'm making the biggest-budgeted fan film! We got to have Bones and Spock have the conversation I've always wanted them to have.
I didn't realize how much the franchise was a part of me until we played with putting characters in these different situations."
Lastly, the director touched on the subject of Leonard Nimoy - a participant in the last two films - and how his death will affect BEYOND.
"It's something you'll see in the film. It obviously affected everybody, because he's been a big part of our lives. There's an attempt to acknowledge that in some way."
