EXCLUSIVE: Following months of rumour and speculation, MCU Exchange is now able to exclusively report (thanks to our sources) that Ava DuVernay (Selma) has been hired by Marvel Studios to direct the upcoming Black Panther film. The Wrap first reported back in May that DuVernay was being courted by Marvel Studios for one of their upcoming "diverse" properties, meaning either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, with most assuming it was the latter (update: with Bleeding Cool later reporting that it was indeed Black Panther). Then last month, our friends over at We Are Wakanda reported that DuVernay was currently in talks with Marvel for Black Panther and that indeed the gig was hers if she wanted it. It now appears that DuVernay has agreed to bring her unique vision to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As we reported via We Are Wakanda, part of the desire to hire DuVernay this early in the process (more than three years before Black Panther's release date of July 6, 2018) is to have her on the set ofCaptain America: Civil War, which will feature the first appearance of both Black Panther and his home country of Wakanda. The only hint of possible Wakanda scenes filmed so far was a casting call sheetthat made it's way online a few weeks back, which sought African/African-American's to serve as laboratory scientists extras. However the latest set photo from Civil War shows a building labeled Institute For Infectious Diseases (which, as we detail, is most likely set in Uganda or the previously established location of Nigeria), and so these extras are probably a part of the scenes filming there. Given the advanced technology of Wakanda, it is most likely that most if not all of the scenes set there will be filmed on green screen (in the same way scenes for Asgard are shot), so we may not be treated to any set photos of Ava DuVernay. If we're lucky though, Marvel will make the official announcement soon and the social media savvy DuVernay may share a selfie or two with her new star Chadwick Boseman, who has yet to be spotted on set.
There's been no word on the screenplay status since it was revealed a few years ago that documentary filmmaker Mark Bailey had been hired to pen a draft of the script, and we've heard that Marvel is still trying to lock down a screenwriter for the newest version. Given DuVerynay's busy schedule and her own admitted lack of knowledge around superheroes it's likely she won't be principally involved in the screenwriting process, but Marvel's obvious confidence in her vision for the film should hopefully help mean we hear more news on the screenwriting front soon. "I don’t know how to answer that question without spoiling it!"Feige started. "It is a role that he is still in the beginning phases of taking on, it’s a mantle he is only beginning to take on because his father is older."

Ever since Ava DuVernay was revealed to be in talks with Marvel Studios to potentially helm the long-awaited Black Panther adaptation, the Selma director has become the ideal candidate; and there were even rumors the she was in final negotiations.However, the filmmaker herself has unfortunately confirmed to Essence that those "talks" with the studio have since fallen through.
“I guess I'll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July [and] Essence weekend!”said DuVernay, today.“I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

Despite rumors that she had signed the dotted line, Ava DuVernay made it known weeks ago that she will not direct Marvel Studios' Black Panther movie. More recently, the filmmaker elaborated on those initial rumors and multiple meetings with studio.
“It was really an enlightened day in terms of the quality of journalism,” DuVernay said of reports that she had officially signed on for Black Panther. As for why talks with Marvel fell through, she says: “For me, it was a process of trying to figure out, are these people I want to go to bed with? Because it’s really a marriage, and for this, it'd be three years. It’d be three years of not doing other things that're important to me. It was a question of, is this important enough for me to do?”
Ava DuVernay then explained why she even considered directing this particular blockbuster movie which would be Marvel's first movie to solely explore a black superhero. “At one point, the answer was yes, because I thought there was value in putting that kind of imagery and culture in a worldwide, huge way that they do in a certain way: flying, exciting action, fun, all those things, and yet still be focused on a black man as a hero — that would be pretty revolutionary,” she said. “These films go everywhere from Shanghai to Uganda, and nothing that I probably will make will reach that many people, so I found value in that. That’s how the conversations continued, because that’s what I was interested in. But everyone’s interested in different things.”
“What my name is on means something to me — these are my children,” she said. “This is my art. This is what will live on after I’m gone. It was a pleasant surprise back in May when it was announced that actor Martin Freeman would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War . And while there have since been many rumors regarding his character, The Hobbit star talked for the first time about the role during a Meet & Greet at the Giffoni Film Festival over the weekend.
"I've done a few days shooting on the Civil War film,"Freeman said (via)."I have 2 more days to go, so it's a relatively small part. Within the framework of the film, he is ambiguous.I like that you can't tell if he is a goodie or a baddie. But he works for the government and a part of his job, is to keep the superheroes and powers in check.Unless they fire me, it's a role that will carry on."
UPDATE: “He works for the American government,” Martin Freeman told BadTaste.IT of his Captain America: Civil War role in the video interview above (via ComingSoon.net).“He works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes power I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.”
According to the most credible rumors, Martin Freeman's character in Captain America: Civil War will be some sort of interrogator and he will also return in the Black Panther movie alongside star Chadwick Boseman. This unconfirmed detail has led many to believe that the English actor is playing Everett Ross, an American Regent of Wakanda who worked as an adviser alongside government officials and the National Security Agency in the comics. And judging by what Freeman said about his involvement, those rumors and speculation might be accurate.
