This movie essentially sold itself asa bridge between the cliffhanger of 2018’s Avengers: InfinityWar and last year’s anticipated April 26 Marvel CinematicUniverse finale Avengers: Endgame. Thebiggest selling tool here with CaptainMarvel (arguably more powerful than any element of Disney’smassive marketing machine) was Infinity War‘s coda, which indicated that CarolDanvers, aka Captain Marvel, was a potential savior to those Avengers snapped away into thin airby Thanos. Disney opened Captain Marvel onInternational Women’s Day, March 8, yet men repped most of the audience for her at 61% in Screen Engine/Comscore’sPostTrak, versus the 45% who showed up to see Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman, which arrived in cinemas asthe first female superhero blockbuster in June 2017. Still, the world respondedas a whole to Captain Marvel, shellingout $456.7 million in her first weekend, at the time the second-best globalopening for an MCU movie (now third, due to Avengers: Endgame)after Infinity War‘s $640.5M worldwide start. Atthe domestic box office, CaptainMarvel notched the third best March start ever with $153.4Mafter 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M)and 2016’s Batman v. Superman ($166M). Captain Marvel shot so high, filmfinance sources told us the film reached breakeven in its first week.
China led Captain Marvel‘s offshore ticket sales with$154 million, but only 25% of that comes back to Disney’s bank account. The UKand South Korea were the second and third best overseas territories,respectively, at $51.8M and $43M, culminating in a global box office of $1.128billion. This translated into global revenues including theatrical rentals (45%of the worldwide box office) of $505M, home entertainment monies of $156M andTV revenues of $204M due to Disney’s great output deals — for a total of $865M.Disney gives out box office bonuses instead of a percent of profits after cashbreakeven, so star Brie Larson and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck sharedin $25M worth of participations. Against $451M global costs, CaptainMarvel flew away with a net profit of $414M, under Infinity War‘shalf-billion haul in Deadline’s 2018 tournament, but defeating Wonder Woman’s black ink of$252.9M by 64%.

The billion-dollar grossing success ofthis movie surprised everyone including Warner Bros and the pic’s own director Todd Phillips.The intent was to make a smart, R-rated movie that would elevate Warner Bros’DC movies in a way that 20th Century’s Logan hadaccomplished previously. Joker,a movie about DC’s most famous villain painted as a disenfranchised, TravisBickle-type in a Gotham mirroring 1980s Ronald Reagan-era New York, initiallyspurred fears about copycat shootings and security concerns at theatersnationwide (one multiplex brieflyclosed down over opening weekend due to credible threats). Given therisky conceit, Warner Bros brought in financial partners Bron Studios andVillage Roadshow to cover the $70 million budget at 25% apiece. Because of Joker‘s R rating, few thought itcould emulate the October opening record of Sony/Marvel’s PG Venom a year before, which posted$80.2 million and $207.4M worldwide. Nonetheless, Warner Bros’ brass believedthe first weekend in October was an ideal time to launch the pic, not because Venom had already broken the mold butrather having had success with another blockbuster awards contender in thatspot: 2013’s Gravity. The one guaranteefor Joker coming away from its criticallyacclaimed premieres at Venice and Toronto last year was that Joaquin Phoenix’sturn as the Joker was Oscar-bound; indeed it was, with the actor taking homethe trophy for Best Actor in February. Joker defanged Venom’s records with a $96.2Mdomestic and $248.4M global opening. Looking back and commenting on how Joker spoke to the greater world, Phillips told us atDeadline’s The Contenders New York: “Some people see it as anindictment of America and other people see it as a mirror for what’s going onin their country, both with the lack of compassion and with the wealth andequality issues.”


The pic’s $1.07billion global box office, the best ever for a R-rated movie, translated into$830M in global revenue across theatrical rentals, home entertainment and TV.Phillips bet on himself here, taking little upfront for an enormous backend,which some estimate is well north of $70M. I hear Phoenix’s deal was standardwith more upfront, and a single percent of profits after cash breakeven, allparticipations totaling an estimated $105M. After $393M in total costs, ourfilm-finance sources now having all the intel after the pic’s completed run seea net profit of $437M. Warner Bros only gets half of that, withBron and Village Roadshow splitting the rest.

Wow. That $1.45billion global box office yielded $1 billion in overall revenues. Total costswere $453M, including $150M production cost, $145M global P&A spend, andparticipations of $35M which were bonus deals for Gad, Bell, Menzel, thefilmmakers and the Lopezes. Frozen 2 warmed up $599 in netprofit for Disney at the end of the day.
