It was a year ago today that Avengers:Endgame opened and became a cultural cinematic phenomenonunlikely to be seen again at the global and domestic box offices for sometime. Avengers: Endgame decimated every box office record as weknow it with a first-ever $1.2 billion worldwide start and $357.1 milliondomestic opening (at a then record 4,662 theaters). The type of cash studios typicallypray their tentpoles make in a lifetime, the swan song of Iron Man and CaptainAmerica made in a weekend.
Close to 365 days later, it’s stilljarring to think about the awesome amount of money made by exhibition, whichoverperformed on all cylinders for this movie — even more so with now withmovie theaters globally completely shuttered out of safety from COVID-19. It’sa situation that has some closely aligned to the pic’s success unable to take avictory lap given the precarious situation the industry is weathering.Nonetheless, once we’re back up and running, Endgame remains abenchmark, an indication of the potential that lies out there for the movietheater business, especially when the right film hits the social zeitgeist atthe right time.
Looking back, the industry definitelyexpected Endgame to be huge in the wake of the success of its firstinstallment, Avengers: Infinity War. That cliffhanger — arguably themost jawdropping since Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — chartedrespective record global and domestic openings of $640.5M and $257.7M(before Engdame crushed those) and became at the time the fifthhighest-grossing movie of all-time with $1.369B. Some had some doubtsthat Endgame‘s box office could hit unprecedented levels given theJoe and Anthony Russo-directedpic’s three-hour running time, which was roughly 30 minutes longer than Infinity War.
But then ticketswent on sale April 1, promptly crashing AMC’s servers and setting first-daypresales records for the chain as well as Regal and digital/online ticketretailers Fandango and Atom Tickets. In fact, all exhibitors were seeing recordpresales. Heading into opening weekend, industry insiders informed Deadlinethat Endgame had already banked between $120M-$140M inpresales before the pic even hit the screen, beating the estimated $100M totalfor Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That made sense: 61% of theaudience bought tickets online versus 37% at the multiplex per ComScore/ScreenEngine, with Fandango later backing up that estimated figure reporting thatthey’d sold $127M worth of advance tickets for Endgame.
More indicatorsof Endgame‘s future success: its insane social media wattage.Both Endgame trailers were two of the most-watched of alltime, clocking massive 24-hour views of 289M on December 7, 2018 and 268M onMarch 14, 2019. The pic’s social media universe, per RelishMix, was secondto Infinity War with 2.45 billion followers across .... This blew away the social media counts of other big campaigns, such as Fateof the Furious (1.8B), Beauty and the Beast (1.3B)and Despicable Me 3 (1.2B).
With all these tealeaves and intel, movie theaters around the world braced for the stampede,planning round-the-clock showtimes as well as MCU festivals at their theaters.
Then the numberscame rolling in.
China’s massivefirst day of $107M on April 23 last year was a record. Then $60M came indomestic Thursday night previews, which feasibly beat Star Wars: ForceAwakens’ record. Stateside, Endgame became thefastest pic to cross $100M in 17 hours, besting Force Awakens’ 21-hourrecord. A record opening domestic day of $157.1M, and an $886M opening-weekendoverseas record. Then came the repeat business with $147.4M in weekend 2, thesecond-best sophomore weekend for a film in U.S./Canada behind ForceAwakens. Driving business: Premium screens, Imax and 3D seats, whichrepped 41% of the pic’s business — tickets that easily went for $20 or more apop.
While Disneydemanded from U.S. and Canadian theater chains 65% of gross, most exhibitorstold us they were better off with those steep terms than a film where they hadto pay a distributor only 30%. Captain Marvel, even though shewas in her eighth weekend when Endgame opened, saw spilloverbusiness as a Marvel sister being the No. 2 pic over April 26-28 with $8.3M.
A late Junererelease of Avengers: Endgame with bonus footage pushed thefilm to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the worldwide box office with$2.797 billion, finally defeating James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.79B),which held the record for close to a decade. Marvel boss Kevin Feige announcedthe all-time record to fans at the studio’s Hall H presentation at San DiegoComic Con last July.
When, oh, when canwe expect an opening of this magnitude again? Especially in a post COVID-19recession that is expected to see closures of theaters?
The good news oncethe world opens back up: Distributors believe a $300M+ domestic opening isindeed possible in the future, even if the nation’s theaters dropped from itscurrent mid-5,000 levels to around 4,000. Essentially a 3,800-wide theaterbreak is required to reach an Endgame-like box office result.
Butit all comes down to what exactly the next cultural phenomenon will be. Isit Avatar 2 on December 17, 2021? Is it another MCU finale in10 years? Is it Sony’s Spider-Man villain team-up TheSinister Six whenever that happens? Or the next iteration of StarWars on December 16, 2022?


THE BOX SCORE
Endgame‘s first global weekend of $1.2 billion alone covered the pic’s combined$511M production and global marketing theatrical costs with surplus cash tospare — unheard of for any pricey tentpole. China itself delivered a finalgross of $614.3M, becoming the top-grossing U.S. title in the Middle Kingdom.Twenty-five percent of that figure ,or $153.5M, came back to Disney. Afteramassing more than $2.797 billion, Disney saw an estimated $1.18 billion intheatrical rentals. Add in overall worldwide home entertainment and TV streamsand revenues climb to $1.789B (not including merchandise). Those $511Mtheatrical costs were included in a greater global costs that amounted to$899M. Participations were massive at $175M, 25% higher than Infinity War‘s $140M. Robert DowneyJr. in his Iron Man finale here walks away with an estimated $55M in back-endprofits, after around $20M upfront. Many cast members received box officebonuses, which is how Disney hammers its talent deals (versus profits sharesafter cash breakeven). Net profit here is a mindblowing $890M, which blows awaythe early forecasts on black ink we were hearing from film finance sourcesduring the pic’s opening weekend of $600M-$650M. Endgame‘s net profit is also 78%higher than the half-billion that Infinity War returned to Disney, that pic ranking as last year’s winner ofDeadline’s Profit Tournament.

一年前的今天,复仇者联盟4上映,并获得了一段时间内难以复制的全球文化现象级的票房成绩。在创纪录的4662馆上映下,12亿的全球开画以及3.57亿的北美开画把既往的开画记录扫进历史的尘埃。钢铁侠与美队的这首谢幕挽歌仅用了一个周末的时间,就取得了绝大部分大片梦寐以求的累计票房。
一年过去了,在新冠肆虐影院关闭的今天,复联4当时给院线带来的超乎预期的收益依然让人难以想象。虽然如今属于业界的寒冬,我们不好对它倾注太多的赞美之词;但在一切回归正常后我们相信,妇联4将成为一个历史的标杆,提醒我们在对的时间的一部对的电影,将在电影院线释放出多大的盈利潜力。
回望起来,复联3的成功无疑让业界多复联4早就有很高的期许。创纪录的北美与全球开画、挤进影史前五的累计票房、以及一个吊人胃口程度也许要追溯到《星球大战:帝国反击战》才能有类似的体验的结尾,复联3已经开了一个好头。当初唯一让业界担心的其实是约3小时的片长,有的分析因此认为复联4很难创造新高。
在4月1日预售开启之时,这部分怀疑迅速消失了。购票平台大面积崩溃,所有的北美院线平台与网络购票平台都录得创纪录的首日预售成绩。考虑到61%的网络购票占比与37%的连锁院线购票占比,影片毫无疑问将创造预售记录,而事实也确实如此。
在社交媒体上,复联4也是现象级的。占据历史24小时播放量前二的两支预告片,仅次于复联3的全平台社交媒体账号粉丝数量,话题度让近年如美女与野兽、速度与激情8等热门影片都相形见绌。
兆象已现、锋芒已露,全世界的影院都已经紧锣密鼓地安排排片、设立物料,等待着人潮的纷涌而至。复联4的统计数字很快滚滚而来。
中国的提前场记录、北美的提前长记录、达到1亿票房最短时长、北美首映日记录、北美开画记录、海外开画记录、全球开画记录、北美次周末历史第二……种种的记录应运而破。高级厅、Imax屏幕、3D占据了影片41%的票房,也由此带来了高企的票价与脆弱的记录。
(注:与其他漫威和星战电影的首月类似),迪士尼只分给北美院线35%的分成,但院线依然欣然接受,哪怕在同期其他电影的分成能够高达70%。甚至《惊奇队长》,一部已经上映了一个多月的电影,在复联4的造势下都重登周亚宝座。
在六月底的加长版扩映/重映的助推下,漫威掌舵人凯文费奇在SDCC的全体粉丝面前宣布,复联4最终超越了《阿凡达》,打破了尘封近十年之久的全球票房记录。
新冠的肆虐正在给影院业沉重的打击,以后我们真的还能看见类似级别的开画吗?尽管北美馆数预期将在疫情后从5500+跌落到4000左右,院线公司依然对这一前景表示乐观,他们认为大概3800馆就足以创造3亿级别的开画了。那么问题来了,什么影片才能再达到这一高度呢?又一部漫威宇宙十年集大成作?阿凡达续集?索尼蜘蛛宇宙的反派集结有戏吗?或者说迪士尼的星战再次重启作?
回到盈利成绩本身,复联4首周12亿的票房已经足以覆盖影片的制作与宣发成本了,对于这个级别的大制作来说是前所未有的。1.75亿的分红中,小唐尼大概占据了5500万(此外还有2000万的片酬),其他大部分漫威演员也都获得了相对稳定的票房奖励(注:无需考虑成本的分红)。影片8.9亿的收益远超开画周的业界估计,也大幅超越了前作复联3。

《寄生虫》这就纯属DL蹭热度了,美国的发行商Neon是赚了点,但上榜主要还是CJ娱乐的海外发行授权费的功劳。CJ娱乐作为韩国的公司的盈利给算进DL这个榜里根本就不对嘛,要这么算流浪地球哪吒也应该上总榜了
