We were driving along the main road just outside GC and saw Musiara/Mapema walking with a purpose. We followed her and she had a kill in some reeds not far from Lake Nukoro, a huge warthog. Figuring she had left the cubs stashed away back in the center land around the lake we watched her for a few then left to go see Scar who was where the cubs were. We get there and take some pics of Scar then saw one of the cubs out in the open on his own, Scar was calling but not sure why (even still not sure what he was calling for, he didn't seem to notice or care about what was going on just a 100' away. We drive over to the cub, there was only one and it looked frantic, a look up in the trees and Sammy spotted the Martial Eagle. The cub was out in the open and seemed aware he was being watched or nervous without mom around. He made his way towards a small water crossing about 3' wide, 30 feet when your tiny! Before he got there the eagle flew out of the tree in a flash, it landed so close I had thought he landed right on top of the cub and stuck his talons in the poor little guy. All of a sudden the feisty little cub let out a screech like we never expected, for whatever reason the eagle flew back up in the tree. Maybe he wasn't sure if there were any near by lions hearing the cries of the cub..
Then the cub jumped into the water, on the opposite bank the wall was too steep for him to climb and I said now we get to watch this little cub drown!
He swam to the side and after lots of effort he finally made it up but was out in the open again. He bolted for a tree about 6' away and disappeared, we thought he went into a whole. When we drove over there he was tucked inside a bush growing up the side of a tree. The eagle was still watching and looking...This was the most stressful things I've seen in the last 3 times of going! Yes it is nature and this Eagle is responsible for many dead cubs. Reading it vs watching it are two entirely different things!
These pics are pretty terrible, it was just before dark and the shutter speed and shakiness made for some really poor pictures. Mine and Teresa's nerves were shot! The next morning when we first seen Mapema we only saw one cub, then the other appeared. What a relief! Others have seen the same thing through out the time we were there. One moprning we saw Mapema looking up into the trees and calling the cubs, they came out of hiding and they walked off. Lake Nukoro is a dangerous place!
