十多年前曾发过一个帖子，其中谈到小说创作并不是象科学研究那样以实事为基础，而是构造作不得真的故事。小说是虚构的作品。但是一部好的小说，尽管情节是虚构的，它却能反映真实的人性和生活。我在帖子中还举了《红楼梦》与《天龙八部》这两部小说作例子。现发觉严肃、认真、仔细研究《红楼梦》的人似乎比严肃、认真、仔细研究理论物理的人还要多得多。我还是把我的帖子再贴一次吧！

What is fiction? On one hand, fiction is simply made-up stories, in other words, lies. On the other hand, fiction is a kind of artistic enterprise that answers the question “What if?” Therefore, part of a fiction can be made up and part can be truthful and comes from the writer’s experience or education. Though fiction is only made-up stories, the best storytellers know that within each tale there is a logic and inevitability that must be honored. There could be truth in a story but the truth in fiction isn’t necessarily the fact as scientists strive for in their scientific researches. Instead, it is the kind of truth we say is “true to life” or “this is the way life is supposed to be.”

The basic elements of fiction include plot, character, conflict, setting, language, tone, etc. All of these elements are combined to create a story. The story of Dream of the Red Chamber is a good one because it has a good plot, vivid characters, various conflicts, ......, and most importantly, it was an unfinished story. The story was not completed by the original author (曹雪芹), which left all kinds of scenarios for people to imagine later, especially the part of plot.

金庸的《天龙八部》也是一部气势场面恢宏、人物情节复杂的好书。全书共有五十章。要是谁愿意出钱请上这么一百个红学家，只让他们读小说的前二十五回，再让他们续后二十五回或猜一猜小说的可能结局，再同原书比较，一定是一件非常有意思的历史事件。
