As Formula One returns to Europe the teams see it as a good opportunity to bring bigger upgrade packages. Having been unusually quiet in the opening rounds Ferrari had a raft of updates for the SF15-T in Spain. (Please click on the links below to view more detailed images of each update)

The front brake ducts featured a new inboard fin with a vertical slot midway along its length (marked in yellow). The fin sheds a vortex that assists in how airflow moves around the front face of the sidepod. The crossover pipe work (marked in blue) was also increased in size, airflow collated by the scoop is passed through the slim pipework and ejected out through the wheel (green arrow), this airflow helps to control the wake shed by the front tyre.

Revised bargeboards proliferated the area ahead of the sidepods, featuring slots at the leading and trailing edge of their surface. Allowing some of the high pressure to bleed into the low pressure flow behind the bargeboard, increasing their operating window and improving flow around the sidepods undercut.
改良的侧箱导流板(bargeboards) 在顶部和后缘表面存在凹槽,增加了侧箱前方的面积。这种设计允许一些高压气流在侧箱导流板后面流入低压带,增加它们的运行窗口,提升气流围绕侧箱的下削效果。


The largest upgrades came to the SF15-T's sidepods, with their geometry altered considerably (note yellow line which outlines the sidepods shape), making their design dramatically different to anything we have seen before. The bodywork clings to the upper side impact structure more closely now, along with the radiator which as we havepreviously seen is one of the most innovative parts of the SF15-T. The previous conjoined airflow conditioner and leading edge cockpit fin (Blue) have been replaced by an elongated cockpit fin (green) and an airflow conditioner that arches over to meet with the central section of the sidepod (blue). The changes are not only aimed at increasing the performance of the airflow that downwashes over the sidepod but also the rear tyres wake footprint, which should lead to an increase in downforce and reduction in drag.

Further down the sidepod, the team introduced a fin just where the airflow starts to turn toward the coke bottle region (marked in yellow). We've not seen a team position a fin here post 2009, mostly owing to the regulation changes that looked to clean up the number of aerodynamic devices that can be placed around the car. The fin forms a pressure gradient that creates a vortex that'll improve flow around the sidepod and in-turn improve flow into the coke bottle. This is of particular importance as they've also reduced the size of thecooling outlets at the rear of the sidepod, raising the base of the outlet above the coke bottle, reducing its waist size in the process (shape difference marked in yellow).

Ferrari have also updated the floor area ahead of the rear tyres, adding two slots ahead of the dog-legged shaped slot they already employed. These slots help to control how the airflow from the deformation of the tyre, squirts airflow laterally into the diffusers path, robbing it of consistency and therefore downforce.
法拉利也升级了后轮前方的底板区域(floor area),在他们已经使用的之字形凹槽的前方添加了两个凹槽。这些凹槽有助于控制来自轮胎的乱流直接注入扩散器,强制其保持持续性及下压力。


The rear brake duct housings were also revised by the team, with the upper horizontal control vane amended, the angle of attack was increased and split into two sections rather than one (marked in yellow). Meanwhile, at the rear of the brake duct housing the team removed the vertical inboard fence. Both of these changes are designed to improve the aerodynamic operating window of the brake duct, whilst improving the upwash of flow, assisting the other airflow structures in the region.
车队也修改了后刹车管道的外壳,修正了上方水平控制叶片(upper horizontal control vane),攻角增大,并分割为两个部分,而不是从前那样的一个(黄色标识)。同时车队从后刹车管道外壳上去掉了垂直内侧栏 (vertical inboard fence)。这些变化都是设计来用于提升刹车管道的空气动力学运行窗口,同时增加上洗气流,帮助此区域内其他气流整理成型。


Mounted to the diffuser gurneys support you'll now find another pair of winglets, these are another first, introduced to assist not only the brake ducts ahead but also the diffuser, upwashing the airflow they receive. The periphery of the diffuser is perhaps the most sensitive area, as not only does it have tyre squirt to contend with but has a steeper angle of attack than the central portion, meaning flow detachment can be an issue. The use of these small winglets above the outboard section of the diffuser will likely improve stability.

Lastly, having previously employed two rear wing gradient slots per endplate in the latter part of 2014 and in testing earlier this season, the team had more recently run with just asingular slot. Minor changes were made to the mainplane and top flap, along with the their angle of attack requiring the secondary slot to make a return in Barcelona. The idea of the slot is to provide additional flow stability to the underside of the mainplane and top flap, whilst changing the way in which the tip vortex rolls up, maximising downforce and reducing drag.

This vast array of changes for one GP is something that Ferrari simply couldn't have attempted in seasons gone by and alludes to a renewed confidence in their CFD, wind tunnel and simulation programme. However, an aero update of this size is difficult to get working out of the box and so I suspect we'll see further progress made over the coming GP's. Mercedes meanwhile also introduced several upgrades, which means that even with a package as large as the one we have just seen the Scuderia produce, making headway into their lead proves difficult. Sebastian persevered with the new package throughout the entire weekend whilst Kimi retained the old configuration for qualifying and the race, with the exception of the twin gradient slot rear wing.
