Janice Poon的话:

Hannibal uses all brands of knives - we have one that is particularly beautiful -- a hand made watermarked Japanese knife.

He also has a couple Porsche knoves and some Global but we have to be careful about not showing the logos.

Hannibal doesn't do product placement. You will not see him knocking back a Coke or using a knife with the brand emblazoned on the side.

The wooden chopping block is fantastic. Alana used it in the first scene she was in of Season 1.

It weighs a ton and the crew hate moving it around but usually there isn't enough room for it in the shot.

Even the ham holder which had Jose Andres logo on the side had the logo hidden - and he's a producer!

来看看拔叔的藏书

Hannibal’s library contains hundreds of rare and interesting books, many that relate strongly to his character’s work, life and interests in both the canon and the NBC series. The bookcase shown in the photo above is found in Hannibal’s Office here and shelves the list of books which follow under the ‘Read More’.

We believe that this bookshelf contains part of what would be Hannibal’s personal collection of books rather than his journals and professional surgical/psychiatry books which seem to be kept in the upper level of his library only accessible via the sliding wooden stairs. The majority are hardbacks with their dust covers removed. Titles listed under the cut that contain links will take you to the book’s Amazon or Google Books listing where more information will be available.

They are listed in the order they appear from left to right and from the highest shelf to the lowest. Unfortunately not all books, like those with obstructed or blank spines, could be located. There are a few other shelves cropped out of the above image which contain stacks of books without covers which are tied by twine. See the end of this post for some interesting facts about how some of the books link to Hannibal’s character!

But how does Hannibal’s personal library relate to his character? Our blog researcher lecter-starling has collected the following interesting facts about some of the books featured on the shelves above.

Vatican Museums: Relates to how in Hannibal, multiple pieces of sculpture, architecture and art from the Vactican Museum are used in Lecter’s own memory palace.

Das grosse Buch der russischen Ikonen (The big book of Russian icons): When Hannibal was 13 (1946), he lived in Lecter Castle. The castle had been converted into a people’s orphanage by Soviet forces after Lithuania was sieged by them. During the passage, it is often cited that instead of all his furnishings, the castle is dominated by the Russian icon Joseph Stalin.

The Three Musketeers: This book may relate to the fact that author Dumas wrote a book about living in Florence (Une Annee a Florence, ‘A year in Florence’) where Lecter spent five years as Dr. Fell. It could also be a subtle hint at the fact that Mads Mikkelsen starred in the 2011 film of the same name.

Doran’s Ministers Manual: A Study and Pulpit Guide for the Calendar Year 1930: This is debatable, but 1930 was the year first believed to be when Lecter was born and was stated so in Harris’ Hannibal.

Alice For Short: The plot line of the book’s heroine is very much like Lecter’s own back story. Picked up and adopted by Middle class people, they both have a male figure in their lives who is an artist (In Hannibal’s case, Robert) and are both seduced by exotic, mysterious, adventuresses (In Hannibal’s case, Murasaki).

The “Living Wall”
As seen in Hannibal’s Dining Room
"Bryan suggested a living wall for the dining room and carrying this idea further, I thought to use a landscape as a backdrop. I found this etching online and loved its Gothic tone. It’s by Oscar Grosch and is in the collection of the Staten Island Museum, which granted us permission to use it. It was reproduced as wallpaper, with corresponding strips covering shallow box shelves, floating on the wall. The plants are all live herbs in containers. The shelves get smaller in size as they rise up the wall because the plants on the lower levels need to receive light in order to survive." - Patti Podesta, Production Designer

Japanese Woodblock Triptych by Utagawa Kunisada
As seen in Hannibal’s Office
Kunisada’s three woodblock panels were painted in 1832 during the Edo Period. They depict three Kabuki actors portraying characters from the drama “Sumidagawa Hana no Goshozome” (The Sumida River Adorned with Cherry Blossoms.) You can read the premise of the play here.:kabuki21.com/onna_seigen.php

These particular prints contain a very subtle link to Hannibal Lecter. As discovered by lecter-starling, the artist Kunisada devoted 14 years of his life (between 1838 - 42) to illustrating the play ‘Genji Monogatori' (Tales of Genji). The play was written by Lady Murasaki Shikibu, a Japanese novelist, poet and lady-in-waiting at the Imperial Court. In Thomas Harris’ prequel Lecter novel ‘Hannibal Rising’ Hannibal lives with his Japanese Aunt for a period of time. She is named Lady Murasaki after the playwright. [Following text contains mild Hannibal Rising spoilers]: Hannibal is even inspired to commit his first murder when Lady Murasaki is insulted by a rude butcher. [Spoilers end]

The print to the right of Kunisada’s work is by an unknown artist and depicts the death of Danjuro Ichikawa VIII(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichikawa_Danj%C5%ABr%C5%8D_VIII), a famous Kabuki actor who committed suicide in 1854.

这幅挂在餐厅的下饭画简直就是绝笔,大图我就不放了

Leda and the Swan by Francois Boucher (c.1740)
As seen in Hannibal’s Dining Room
"It leapt to mind when I first imagined the perverse nature of Lecter. I found that it is in the public domain and its whereabouts unknown, so a little narrative developed: Hannibal secretly owns the painting and stares at it during supper." - Patti Podesta, Production Designer

以上这些厨房大家电,包括第一页的三千多美元的炉具,总的价钱是非常昂贵的,但是汉尼拔剧组拿到了一个好价钱,看看艺术指导Patti Podesta怎么说:

What was your design brief, and what were your references?

I remember Bryan Fuller saying first to me, "Elegant horror movie." He has an immense appreciation for classical order and strange beauty. Nothing is too far out. I put together a group of painter's images to discuss qualities of spatial articulation, light and color, which included Francis Bacon, Gustave Caillebotte, Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper, and Gerhard Richter.

Is Hannibal Lecter's office a nod to the mix of antiques and modern we're seeing so much of these days?

He admires beautiful things from all periods, has an eye for things English and European. I suggested Danish Modern, as it has an order of its own. This was well before Mads Mikkelsen was cast as Lecter, so that bit of humor was fortuitous. Bryan’s first script mentioned Sir John Soane’s office in describing Lecter’s. I thought we could rework those qualities having American Gothic overtones via European Art Nouveau.

Hannibal's desk is an original Leif Jacobsen design purchased from Barry's in Toronto, where we filmed. The pairing of this midcentury desk and the desk chair, with its ultra-tight leather tucking, is a pretty good description of Hannibal. The gray therapy chairs were ordered new from Urban Barn in Toronto, and the side tables are Eileen Gray classics.
What about Lecter's home, setting for all his creepy parties?

The office is meant to impress and intimidate; his home is an enclave. He lives in the Baltimore area, and we thought it would be a historic single-family home that masks what goes on inside. So the exterior was to be precise and not too inviting.

Everyone agreed that Lecter would have a superb chef’s kitchen. In keeping with the lavishness of texture that defines all his spaces, the kitchen has barn wood on the appliance wall contrasting with the stainless appliances. And zebra wood on the cabinet wall, masculine and elegant, definitely European. The island in the center is stainless with pale gray leather panels on the front and sides. The counters and backsplash are two different kinds of travertine, solid on counters and the fabulous strata for the backsplash.

Is it a fully functional kitchen?

Yes. All the appliances are from the GE Monogram series. It is important, in high-end kitchens, for all the appliances to match. Since NBC is owned by GE, we thought we could get a good price on these very expensive items. It appealed to me as an in-joke that Hannibal does his work with appliances made by the network. They turned our request down. Mabe Canada Inc., who reps GE in Canada, stepped up and offered us a serious discount, so the appliances cost in the neighborhood of $18,000.

The dining room is to die for. What was the inspiration?

Bryan suggested a living wall for the dining room, and carrying this idea further, I thought to use a landscape as a backdrop. I found this etching online and loved its Gothic tone. It's by Oscar Grosch and is in the collection of the Staten Island Museum, which granted us permission to use it. It was reproduced as wallpaper, with corresponding strips covering shallow box shelves, floating on the wall.

The plants are all live herbs in containers. The shelves get smaller in size as they rise up the wall because the plants on the lower levels need to receive light in order to survive.
The walls made of moldings were Bryan Fuller's idea. He had seen them in a restaurant. For ours, I chose moldings that had voluptuous curves. We wanted it to become a singularity, and the color needed to be the indigo of the night sky, without going black on camera. It’s a lighter blue than you would imagine. The stain was a mixture of Minwax custom colors, and the different woods gave it variation.

这是剧中一个脸部变形镜头的处理,仿照的是毕加索的名画:Portrait de Dora Maar

Date: 1939 (March 27th)
Technique: Oil on board
Dimensions: 60 x 45 cm
Category: Painting

Dora Maar made a decisive contribution to the growth of Pablo Picasso’s political awareness, being the painter’s partner for the entire period of Guernica’s production. Theirs was a stormy relationship, but it was probably the closest and most intimate that the artist ever had with a woman. During the time that it lasted, Dora Maar was Picasso’s main model and the subject of some of his most iconic portraits, likenesses that are as much a reflection of the restlessness of a turbulent period of political upheaval as of the profound personal relationship the couple shared.
Picasso did at least four different types of portrait of Dora Maar. In the one in the Museo Reina Sofía collection, Dora Maar’s head seems slightly turned to one side, with the hair down, staring defiantly at the viewer through large, slightly faraway eyes, that seem to betray her incipient dementia, in a look that lays open the tragic events of this passionate woman’s life. As has been said on occasion, in these portraits Picasso is using Dora’s facial features as if they were a known, familiar landscape, ravaged by war.
