It is only day two in the Chelsea career of Cesc Fabregas but our summer recruit is already setting his sights on silverware ahead of his first campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish midfielder joined from Barcelona on the eve of the World Cup finals, almost six weeks ago. He had to wait until yesterday, at our Cobham training ground, to meet up with his new team-mates before the squad flew to Austria for the start of our European training camp.

Now, over 24 hours later - and with training sessions under his belt - Fabregas sat down with the official Chelsea website for the first time to discuss his arrival in west London, his evolution as a player since leaving the Premier League three years ago and his aspirations for the future.

‘Everything is really good,’ nods the 27-year-old. ‘After the holiday I was getting excited to start training and playing in pre-season. Now I’m here everyone has really welcomed me, I’m feeling great within the team and I’m happy. I knew for sure I’m going to be happy in London because I love it. For me, it is the best city in the world.’

To see Fabregas around our training base and in the team hotel is to see a man full of confidence and at ease with his new surroundings. This exterior persona is reflected by the manner in which speaks – pleased to have got started and expectant of what lies ahead.

‘It was very important for me that the deal was done before the World Cup. I wanted my head free and to know what I was going to do next season and where I was going to be. I thought I was at the right age and I believed I wanted a change. I looked at all the offers I had and after speaking to the coach I thought Chelsea was the best decision.’

It is clear the chance to work with Jose Mourinho played an important role in Fabregas’s decision, and as a regular opponent of the Portuguese’s teams while at both Arsenal and Barcelona, he is well-placed to assess his new manager’s attributes.

‘Jose’s teams are always difficult to beat and always difficult to play against. Tactically they are very well-composed and they have discipline. He gets the best out of his players.’

On the pitch, Fabregas’s three years in Spain brought the challenge of playing in different positions, including in attack. Those experiences have made him become ‘a more complete footballer’, he says, but a spot in midfield – either in front of the defence or behind the striker – remains the area from which he can cause most damage.

‘I started playing with Fernando when I was 18, on my debut for the Spanish national team, so we’ve been playing together for nine years,’ explains Fabregas. ‘We have won two European Championships and the World Cup together.

‘Diego has been progressing immensely in the last couple of years,’ Fabregas says of another man who featured for Spain in Brazil this summer.

‘He is a real threat in every single game; last season he was playing every three days and he was consistently giving really strong performances. He goes behind the defence and he makes the kind of runs players like me really like because it gives you an option to play the killer ball. I think he will do superbly here.’
