Project staff detected 295 kills (defi nite, probable,
and possible combined) made by wolves in 2004, including
240 elk (81%), 19 bison (6%), 1 moose (<1%), 4
deer (1%), 4 pronghorn (1%), 1 badger (<1%), 2 cougars
(1%), 6 coyotes (2%), 1 golden eagle (<1%), 2 grizzly
bear cubs (1%), 1 raven (<1%), 3 wolves (1%), and 11
unknown prey (4%). The composition of elk kills was
18% calves (0–12 months), 16% cows (1–9 years old),
16% old cows (≥10 years old), 38% bulls, and 12%
elk of unknown sex and/or age (Figure 5). Bison kills included
4 calves (unknown sex), 8 cows, 5 bulls, and 2 of
unknown sex and age.

Injured Bengal tiger recovers

KOLKATA: The Bengal tiger that was brought to the city for treatment from Sunderbans on Friday, is recuperating in Alipore Zoological Gardens. Though the tiger is responding well to treatment, doctors say it is still not out of danger.
"For the first time since he was brought here, he kept his head in normal resting position on Sunday. This posture is considered to be good for a tiger to take rest. These are signs that it is recovering," said divisional forest officer (South 24-Parganas) Subhendu Bandopadhyay.
"The tiger is taking normal diet and is discharging body waste normally. It is, however, too early to say whether he is out of danger. It is also not possible to say right now how many days the injured animal will take to recover fully," said Alipore zoo deputy director Dr Piyali Chattopadhayay.
The tiger will be kept under round-the-clock of observation for a couple of days.
On Sunday, the tiger was given pork and saline water. Infection from the amputated left hind leg had started to spread to other parts of the body, but medication has kept the infection under control.
Doctors are still administering high doses of antibiotics so that septicemia does not set in.
The animal was at death’s door when it was rescued.
Animal experts fear that letting the maimed and ageing big cat out in the wild might not be the right option because it will find it difficult to hunt with a missing foot.
"If the tiger is set free in the jungle after its recovers, it might be difficult for it to hunt for food due to the injury. Whether it will be returned to the jungles or taken to Khayerbari Tiger Rescue Centre depends on his health," said an officer.
Forest department officers want the tiger to stay in the zoo hospital for at least a fortnight before taking a final decision on its rehabilitation.
According to DFO Subhendu Bandopadhyay, an instance of a tiger being bitten on his legs by small sharks on the river was not heard in recent times.

Wild dogs (22) treed the narrators near a tiger's sambar kill, and surrounded the tree, still as silent can be, and fully coordinating with each other. When a tiger appeared, they herded the tiger to a nala bed. The tiger made for the shelter of a Mahula tree, with his back to it, while the dogs surrounded him. After waiting for half-an-hour, the tiger could do nothing, but merely snarl. When the tiger reacted to a pup tweaking his tail, an adult dog took advantage of a momentary loss of cover for the tiger, and with a leap delivered a bite on the tiger's neck, but was subsequently swiped fatally by the tiger. When the bleeding unsettled the tiger and he began licking the blood, the whole pack took advantage of the tiger's diversion of attention and attacked him en masse, biting all over him. Suddenly, they withdrew, with 5 members of the pack dead, but the tiger in a most terrible state. The dholes regrouped and charged the weakened tiger, and then withdrew leaving the tiger in bad shape. In a final assault, the dogs attacked him, one gripping the tiger's throat though having been beaten to a pulp. The tiger tried to give one last offence, but toppled back, and was finished by the dogs. Later examination of the kill yielded 12 dead dogs and only bones, sinews, etc. of the tiger left."

After hearing the cry of the rest of the pack, she charged two dogs, killing one, and then bound away and was followed by the 5 other dogs and 23 from the main pack. She was cornered five miles away, where there were 5 more dead dogs, and her partially eaten carcass. So 30 dogs in total, 6 killed, 1 tigress killed.

尼罗鳄陆地杀狮，描述过程较为详细。猎人在河边放倒了一头野牛，吸引来了狮子和尼罗鳄，最初狮子想吓唬尼罗鳄，但是不奏效。尼罗鳄进一步靠近野牛尸体后，狮子再次冲向尼罗鳄，尼罗鳄只是转身正面刚，狮子再次失败，开始周旋（绕圈）。最后狮子冲上去掌击尼罗鳄头，结果被尼罗鳄一口咬住，叼着径直冲下水。其间狮子玩命反抗，但毫无效果。

Today in the afternoon while on a game drive, looking for Bahati (leopard) with her cubs in a location I had seen in the morning, I got a call on radio from my fellow guides, Henry Sadera and Peter Naurori, that Malaika had just crossed the Talek river and has lost one of the cubs to a crocodile. I abandoned my leopard search and dashed to where Malaika had crossed. I found her when she had already crossed and one of the cubs was looking in the direction of the river and calling (am sure with the hope that the brother who had been taken by croc was still alive). This particular cub spent almost whole afternoon calling.
I drive to the crossing point and found a crocodile with the dead cub next to it at the edge of the water. It was very sad for me and my guest and all Mara guides who knows Malaika. It is very sad that out of the entire original litter, its only 2 cubs left now. We hope she will keep the remaining till they go independent.
