Q. How are you feeling physically and mentally? How do you feel about this tournament?
RAFAEL NADAL: Good. Is the first time I am here without playing official match in my career. Is new situation for me.

But I feel good. I feel that I had good week and a half of practices. Remain this afternoon and tomorrow, the last practice before the competition start for me.

I really hope to be ready. I feel myself more or less playing well. So, yeah.

Q. Between the O2 and now, what was the process like? You were in a pretty bad way at the O2.
RAFAEL NADAL: Had been a long season. Good one, but at the same time long, without playing a lot of tournaments but playing a lot of matches.

Yeah, I had to stop for a while. I started little bit later than what I expected. That's why I was not able to start the year playing in Abu Dhabi and Brisbane. We decided to start later because we needed some more practice, start slow, to be fresher, little bit more fresh mentally and physically, and do things the right way. That's what we tried to do.

Here we are to try my best, try to see if I am able to start.

Q. Has the intensity of your practice been as tough as you wanted it to be?
RAFAEL NADAL: The last week and a half, of course.

Q. I noticed yesterday that you seemed to be having kind of a practice match with Dominic under full match conditions, ball kids, scoreboard, umpire, and everything. Can you tell us how that came about, how that was facilitated? Was it your request?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I wanted to play couple of close competition matches. I played in Kooyong once. Yeah, the club in Kooyong is great, but at the same time the conditions of play are completely different from here. That's my feeling.

We decided to play another match. Talking with the Australian Open, yeah, they give us the chance to play like an open practice but closer to the match for the crowd.

I have a good relationship with Dominic. I spoke to him about that. He was very happy to make that happen, too. We did it. It was a good practice, good feelings for both of us I think. The job was done the right way.

Q. Everybody is talking about you and Roger for winning. Where do you think David Goffin is in his chances of doing well here?
RAFAEL NADAL: The same as always: he is one of the best players of the world. If he is fresh, and I believe that he is, he's very complete player. He can fight for everything. He is a big, talented player, yeah. He has experience already playing big matches. And why not?

Q. Could you have more motivation for this tournament, given the nail-biting final last year?
RAFAEL NADAL: No.

Q. Extra motivation?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. Is impossible to be more motivated than last year or any year. For me, Australian Open always, if you are not enough motivated, 100% motivation to play this tournament, probably you don't love this sport.

Q. What do you see as the toughest matchup for you in this tournament?
RAFAEL NADAL: Toughest opponent?

Q. Yes.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't think about that. I think about first round I play against Estrella Burgos. I go day by day as I always did. Is going to be the first official match of the year. Don't make sense to think farther than that.

I am looking to have a good practice this afternoon, good practice tomorrow, and be ready for Monday. That's my goal. And let's see. Important for me is beginning of the tournament this year.

Q. How are you feeling without Toni, your first tournament without him as a coach? How are you feeling these days?
RAFAEL NADAL: It's not my first tournament without Toni. Is my first tournament that he is not my official coach. But I played plenty of tournaments in my career without Toni, so...

Yeah, is a change in my career, but let's wait little bit, you know. If I feel strange in a few months, but now is just the beginning. I feel happy with my team. Toni give me a lot during all my career, as I said thousands of times. I don't think is necessary to repeat again and again. Without Toni, I probably won't be here today. That's the real thing. I can't thank him enough for everything.

But now he decided to do another thing. He is focused on the academy. He came to some of my practices during December. No, all the natural process, and that's it, no? Happy with all the things he's doing now in the academy.

I'm happy with the way that I am working with Carlos, with Francis, with the rest of my team. Let's keep working hard to try to have a good year.

Q. Billie Jean King said yesterday if she was still playing, she would refuse to play on Margaret Court Arena because of the many comments Margaret has made against gay people. What is your thought on those comments, and would you understand if some players felt uncomfortable playing in an arena with her name on it?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't have the whole information. Really, I am here to play tennis. I am not here for things that really doesn't have a big impact on the game.

I love the Margaret Court Arena. If the Australian Open decides to hold the name or decides to change the name, is not my decision. I am really just here to play in Australian Open. I going to play. If they put me to the Hisense, I play to the Hisense. If they put me to the Rod Laver, I play the Rod Laver. If they put me to the Margaret, doesn't matter the name, I play.

Q. Is there any special importance for you that you're starting the year as the No. 1 player, or is that just kind of a fact?
RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry?

Q. Is there any special importance for you that you're starting the year as the No. 1 player?
RAFAEL NADAL: Is better to start No. 1 than No. 20. I'm being honest. That's the real thing (smiling).

Everyone starts from zero. I start from zero again. Start as new season, an exciting one. I hope to be healthy and competitive, and most important thing, I hope to enjoy tennis one more year.

Q. When Toni has come to your practices, does he participate as much as before? Has he given you a bit more space with your team?
RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry?

Q. You said Toni comes to your practices in the off-season. Does he participate as much when he has done?
RAFAEL NADAL: He participate as much as he wants to participate. He's my uncle. He's more than anything else. That's it. Everything that he wants to do with me, I am happy with, no? Is not about my decision. He has enough confidence with me, or I have enough confidence with him, to talk about anything I have to talk.

From your perspective is different than my perspective. Is difficult to explain. But is part of my family. Is not only coach that he's coming or not coming. I call him like a family. He love me. I love him. Is not about, you know, professional relationship. Is a familial relationship.

In terms of professional things, I spoke to him few days ago, speaking about how the life going, how the tennis going.

If I have something to ask, I ask to him. If he have something to tell me, he call me and tell me. No, no, is not difficult situation. Is very easy situation.

Q. In recent months both Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka have suffered with their injuries and time out of the game. Stan was in here earlier telling us how hard it had been trying to get back. Andy did something similar when he wrote his Instagram post recently. Now that you're a little older in your career, do you value this more than ever now, when you're preparing for a season? Are you aware it's not going to last forever?
RAFAEL NADAL: I was in the situation that they are probably more times than what they have been, you know. Is nothing new for me that I get injury. I don't know what's going to happen. The problems that they had in different issues, you know, different injuries, but I had these problems during my career couple of times, no?

I really since the beginning, because in 2005 I had a very tough foot injury, and I don't know if I will be able to keep playing tennis. During all these years, I was very happy to keep playing tennis, no? I don't need to be 31 to say, Okay, I am lucky to be here. No. With 22, I felt the same. I'm still feeling the same.

In general terms, I feel lucky to have the chance to enjoy all the experiences that the tennis give us. I hope to keep enjoying that moments for a while. That's it.

I wish Stan and Andy a good recover, all the best for the future, healthy. Another thing is that there is too many injuries on the tour. I am not the one to say, but somebody have to look about what's going on.

Q. Changes may be needed?
RAFAEL NADAL: I repeat: I am not the one to take decisions. But when something is happening too often, something we are not doing well.

Q. Do you think that decisions will be made about this, that the tour and the ITF will look at these things?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, no. I am not saying what to do. I am just playing tennis. But when something is happening, you need to analyze why.

Q. How did you feel about the game tonight? Where do you see any areas in which you'd like to improve?
RAFAEL NADAL: Happy for the start, of course. Is a positive start with a good result. If I do months without playing official match is always a little bit more difficult.
But I started with positive feelings. That's most important thing for me now. Of course, there is things to improve. But the thing that I need to improve, the matches will give me that things, no?
Victories are the most important thing now.
Q. How is your body feeling?
RAFAEL NADAL: Good. If I don't feel myself ready, I will not be here. So I am happy to be here, happy that I'm on court again. Last year have been a long, very good but long season. So yeah, let's start another one and try to don't think much about what happened the year before.
Q. Your knee felt good tonight, didn't have any problems at all?
RAFAEL NADAL: No problems. No problems.
Q. Did you have any doubts going into the match or were you confident you were fully there?
RAFAEL NADAL: I always have doubts. I said hundred times, I believe that the doubts are good because when you have doubts, it's because you aren't too arrogant, because you have respect for your opponent, because you have respect for the game, and because you don't consider yourself unbelievable good.
The real thing is I always have doubts, but at the same time I have the confidence that I was ready to start the tournament. That was the case.
Through to second round. That's a positive thing for me. I am looking forward to play the next match.
Q. You're now No. 1 in the world. What would you have thought if I said to you this time last year you were going to be No. 1 in the world?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, was difficult to imagine after all the things that happened. Being realistic, I had very positive feelings last year at the beginning of the season. I started playing so well here. I could not imagine to be No. 1, but I had good hopes to play a good season. That's my feelings.
Q. Do you have to pinch yourself sometimes to realize where you are? Is it a reality check?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, I don't need to reality check. I know where I am. I really appreciate that. At the same time I don't think much about all these kind of things, no? I just think about try to be ready for the next tournament, for the next practice. I am not thinking all day, Oh, how good I am, I'm No. 1 of the world. No, is not the case.
I just go day by day. I know in sport, in general, the things changes so quick. You need to be ready to accept all the challenges that's not going to happen.
Today you are here, the next day or a couple of months you are here (high to low). Sometimes you here and then you are here, like last year (low to high). Is part of the sport life.
The most important thing is just enjoy and keep having the passion and the motivation to keep working hard, to be where I am today.
Q. We heard a little bit about the players meeting on Friday. Do you think a separate players union is a good idea?
RAFAEL NADAL: Every year here in Australia, there is talks about new things. There is always an issue here in Australia, no? I really believe that there is plenty of time later on the year to speak about things. But now is the moment, for me personally, to play tennis, to play tennis and to try my best on court. That's all really. I really focus on this.
Q. Was it odd for you to be out on the court this evening and not seeing your uncle Toni in the players box at any moment?
RAFAEL NADAL: Toni was not always on the box. It's true that in the Grand Slams he was here all the time. But in plenty of tournaments, he was not there.
Strange or not? I cannot think about all day that. I just have to move forward, believe in the team I have. I feel lucky I have Carlos today in my box, and the rest of the team that is a huge support.
Toni is the most important person in my career, everybody knows. I can't thank him enough for all the things. But today he is not here. He's doing a great job in my tennis academy, no? Just can say thanks to him for that, too.
But today I have to think about the team that is here. I am happy with it.
Q. You had a nice exchange with Victor at the net after the match. Was it strange playing someone who has been on the tour for a long time for the first time?
RAFAEL NADAL: I know him well. We played a good exhibition a few years ago in Puerto Rico. He's a good friend. He's a great guy. He has an amazing story of his career. He's a person that everybody love him on tour.
I was happy that I had the chance to play with him.
Q. A moment ago you mentioned your motivation for the game. What keeps you motivated?
RAFAEL NADAL: Because I love the tennis and I love the competition in general. I love playing in the biggest and more historic courts of our tour. I appreciate all these kind of things, no?
That motivates me. Every day for me is a good motivation to go on court in front of a great crowd here in Australia, in Rod Laver Arena. That's really special feelings, no?
I know this is not forever. I want to enjoy all the moments that I have the chance to spend on this historic stadiums. That's what I am doing: enjoy every moment, and try to give me chances to keep playing in these places, with chances couple more years.
Q. If you had the chance to talk to yourself 20 years ago, what advice would you give yourself?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think I was lucky enough to have the right people around me. I believe all the advices I received from my family, my father, my mother, my uncle, the team, I really believe I had the right people around me. I don't think I needed myself 20 years ago.

Def. Dzumhur 6-1 6-3 6-1
Q. What was your day like, how did you prepare for the match, whether the match met your expectations?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, no, was a good match, of course. When you win 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round, is always a great result, no? Without playing well, is impossible to have these kind of results. So happy for that. Happy to be through, yeah, fourth round. Already is good news.

Yeah, my preparation was normal. Just wake up, gym, coming here, having some warmup in the gym, then some warmup on court, had lunch, played some Parcheesi. That's it, that's all.

Q. Did you think your form was this good coming into the tournament? Did you think you were playing this well when you arrived?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no? I didn't think about when I arrived how I going to be in two weeks. I am already two weeks and one day here. I just try to go day by day.

I needed hours of court, hours of practice, hours of playing sets with different players. That's what I did. I think I did a good preparation here. I felt myself playing well. That's all. Here I am. I am in the fourth round. That's because I am doing the right things. Let's see how far I can go.

Q. What is your opinion about having players going out there when it's 40 degrees?
RAFAEL NADAL: My opinion that is not safe enough sometimes, you know? But is not the only place. That's the real thing. Have been very, very tough conditions yesterday and today. Yeah, sometimes is too much and can become little bit dangerous for health. That's the real thing. It's not nice to see players suffering that much on court.

But there is one positive thing, only one: was not humidity, was dry. That's make a big difference. Even if is very warm, still very tough. But in my opinion is tougher, for example, Rio de Janeiro than here, because the humidity there is crazy and almost the same heat.

That's the only positive thing. The rest of the things are very negative to play in that conditions.

Q. Do you think is big advantage to play at night in cooler conditions, and there should be a balance on who should play in the night and who in the afternoon? We have the impression some players only play at night, and some others play any time.
RAFAEL NADAL: Being honest with you, having one day off, doesn't make a big difference. You are in the same conditions than your opponent. If you have to play the next day, playing during the day or playing during the night, probably will make a difference. Having a day off I don't think will make a difference for the next day.

In terms of competing that day, is dangerous because you can lose sometimes the control of your body when it's that warm. But you are in the same conditions than your opponent.

Playing day or night? Of course, there is players that plays more on night.

Q. Because they sell more tickets or other reasons?
RAFAEL NADAL: You are here since a while, no (smiling)? You know the same like me why there is player that play the night and others play the day. There is television, there is tickets to sell, there is players that achieve more than others. That's why some players plays in prime time and other ones don't play in the prime time.

That's easy to understand. It's not about fair or not fair.

Q. How do you think the game has changed the most during your time playing?
RAFAEL NADAL: Hmm. In my opinion, there is less work inside the point. Before the players was trying to play one ball there, one ball there to finish the point. Since couple of years ago, I feel that the tour became little bit more crazy in that aspect, no? People are going for the point quicker than before. The players are returning faster than before, going for the winners since the return. From the baseline, at the minimum opportunity, peoples goes for the shot, no?

We used to wait for the right ball to go for the winner. Now you go for the winner even in not very good positions.

Q. What challenges does Schwartzman present for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: He's a great player. He's a player that last year had an amazing year, and this year start again playing so well. So already won three matches here, playing again at very high level. He's a very complete player.

Being honest, he's a player that if I don't play my best, probably I don't going to win. He's a player that have all the shots, big control from the baseline, don't miss much. He's able to change directions easy. He's a player that already played the quarterfinals in the US Open. He's already in the fourth round.

Tough one, and I need to play my best.

Q. Have you seen the Hollywood movie "Battle of the Sexes"?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. Sorry, but I didn't see.

QF: Press Conference Transcript -
(ret.) vs.Cilic 3-6 6-3 6-7 6-2 2-0
Q. How bad was the injury? How does this affect your schedule for the rest of the year?
RAFAEL NADAL: I can't say because I don't know. Just happened 10 minutes ago and is impossible to know.
Q. When did you feel it? Where exactly is it?
RAFAEL NADAL: As I said before, is difficult to know exactly what it is now. Is difficult to know exactly the muscle. Just happened minutes ago. This type of injury is difficult to know immediately, no?
We need to wait a couple of hours. Tomorrow I am going to do a test, an MRI here, then we will know. But now...
Q. When did you understand you had the problem, what moment? 3-2? 2-1?
RAFAEL NADAL: I am very sorry but I really cannot remember now.
Start to feel the muscle little bit tired in the third, but playing normal, no limits, no limitation. Then in the fourth at one movement, one dropshot I think, I felt something. At that moment I thought something happened, but I didn't realize how bad, how bad was what's going on in that moment.
Just happened, and accept the situation. That's all.
Q. Must be terribly disappointing for you after how hard you worked to be here. The frustration must be tough to accept?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes. Tough moments. Is not the first time an opportunity that is gone for me. I am a positive person, and I can be positive, but today is an opportunity lost to be in the semifinals of a Grand Slam and fight for an important title for me, no?
In this tournament already happened a couple of times in my life, so it's really I don't want to say frustration, but is really tough to accept, especially after a tough December that I had without having a chance to start in Abu Dhabi and then Brisbane.
Yeah, I worked hard to be here. We did all the things that we believed were the right things to do to be ready. I think I was ready. I was playing okay. Yeah, I was playing a match that anything could happen: could win, could lose. I'm being honest. He was playing good, too. That's the real thing.
But I was fighting for it. I was two sets to one up. Yeah, just accept, recover, come back home, stay with my people, and keep going. That's all. Always in the tough moments, even if difficult to think about it, there is so many positive things that happened in my career.
It's a negative thing, but I don't going to complain because happened to me more than others. But on other hand I was winning more than almost anyone. That's the real thing. But who knows, if I didn't have all these injuries...
Q. What do you think he was doing well?
RAFAEL NADAL: Serving well, hitting very strong from the baseline, returning so well. Yeah, he was playing very aggressive. Lot of things.
Q. Is it your thigh or your hip?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. No hip. No hip.
Q. Your leg?
RAFAEL NADAL: I can't tell you exactly the muscle. It's here high.
Q. High on the leg?
RAFAEL NADAL: High on the leg. But I don't want to lie. Tomorrow we going to communicate what's going on after the MRI. You know, is not the moment to say what's going on or what not going on because we really don't know and the doctor really don't know yet. Is better to wait just a few hours. Give me that time, and tomorrow afternoon we'll let you know.
Now is not the moment because anything that we can say not going to be true.
Q. The knee was working well?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, yeah. I was playing 3 hours 50 the other day. Today I was playing over 3 hours. I was running quite well.
Q. Do you have any sense this might not have happened if you'd been able to play a tour level match, had a few shorter matches?
RAFAEL NADAL: Sorry?
Q. If you had played a tour level tournament beforehand where you had a few shorter matches, do you think this may not have happened?
RAFAEL NADAL: If I played the shorter matches here?
Q. If you had played Brisbane, had some shorter matches to build up your fitness.
RAFAEL NADAL: Happened a couple of times here playing tournaments in the past. So not going to be fair saying going to happen or not going to happen.
Maybe if I had the chance to work as hard as I worked last year, maybe will not happen. But was not the case. I had the knee, and I had to go slower, step by step.
We worked as much as we could to be ready. We think we were ready. At least we were in quarterfinals only losing a set. Preparation went quite good. I was playing good tennis. I was fighting for a Grand Slam.
Q. The physio came when you were down 4-1 in the fourth. You called him at the same moment or you asked the umpire to call him before?
RAFAEL NADAL: I called the game before, I think.
Q. Is it something about this surface or the time of year? Is there a reason why you've had more injuries here than in other tournaments?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, there is no reason. But happened. That's it.
Is not the right moment to say for me. Somebody who is running the tour should think little bit about what's going on. Too many people getting injured. I don't know if they have to think a little bit about the health of the players. Not for now that we are playing, but there is life after tennis. I don't know if we keep playing in this very, very hard surfaces what's going to happen in the future with our lives.
