Jean Todt's role in Kimi Räikkönen's WDC is unquestionable.

When I got to meet Jean Todt in Maranello, I was especially interested in theway Todt would see season 2007 which ended in a double victory for Maranello.Equally important would be to hear his description of Kimi Räikkönen as adriver and a person.

I book the flight to Milanand arrive there one evening in February. The next day I continue to Modena by train.

On the platform in Modena I get struck by thethought that I am about to take a step into the deepest Ferrari-country, almostoutsideItaly.I check my pocket - passport is there. Maranello and Ferrari's factory are inpractice the entireItaly'ssource of pride but here everybody practically live and breathe Ferrari.

The taxi stops in front of a long red-brown building. The taxi-driver isclearly proud of his mission, afterall he will get for a short moment to theother side on 'Ferrari's ground'. The guard comes to ask what my business isand I tell him that I have arrived to meet Mr. Todt. I get out of the car afterpaying for my trip and follow a man dressed in uniform.

The guard leads me to the factory's reception. During the next five minutes Imeet five more people who all take me one step closer to Todt. A black Maseratiis parked outside the building. For a moment I wonder if the CEO or someoneelse in the management is driving a car with the wrong label. Then I rememberthat Maserati and Ferrari are part of Fiat-concern.

The busy CEO has several secretaries who guide me to sit and wait for themeeting. My guide is Ferrari's publicist Luca Colajanni, a formerfreelance-reporter who started to work for Ferrari about ten years ago. Thedark-haired man with eyeglasses is a familiar face for tv-viewers who alwaysstands near Kimi during race-interviews.

Todt's secretary comes to tell that the CEOis now available. We step into a huge room where Todt is sitting behind a bigdesk.

Todt shakes my hand firmly and sits on his chair made of leather. The table haspiles of papers in a strict order. Todt has written with a very neathandwriting on each pile of paper what it is about.

E-mails, faxes, notes written by hand. The big room also has anegotiation-corner and there are some photos and a couple of paintings on thewall.

Todt's cellphone starts ringing before the interview starts. He apologises andtalks for a moment - the subject is next spring's GP-races.

After that Todt walks back to his table and closes his cellphone. Todt asks meif I want coffee or something else to drink. I ask for a cup of coffee and thenwe can start.

First I ask Todt what kind of memories he has from Räikkönen's first season2007.

- The year was simply very tough. First we had to really concentrate on ourcar's reliability-problems which affected our position in both WC-battles.After that we were caught in the middle of a spy-saga caused by our formeremployee and which also included the trial-aspect. Our ex-employee handed overFerrari-data to our main competitor.

According to Todt the thing that made the situation easier, was how Ferrari'steam stayed united and was able to pull of a strong performance.
- Our co-work was strong starting from the beginning of the season. Our bothdrivers did a great job.

According to him Ferrari is these days always put under a magnifying glass andgets a lot of
publicity.

Todt was satisfied with how professionally the team worked under huge pressureand how they were able to tighten the situation in the competitor's camp.

- It was especially pleasant that we didn't make any mistakes in the last tworaces. That's how Kimi got into a situation where he was able to become worldchampion.

According to Todt the last GP inBrazilbrought emotions to thesurface because Ferrari's chances depended upon a certain order when crossingthe finish line. Räikkönen had to win and Massahad to come in second. On top of that Hamiltonhad to get a certain amount of points so the situation looked very difficultbefore the last race.

- Fortunately everything went well in the end. We had already secured the WCCbeforeBrazilbecause McLaren was shut out of the serie. Of course we would rather had won onsporting grounds instead of on juridical grounds, Todt admitted.

However he reminds that Ferrari would have got more points even if McLaren'spoints would have been taken into account.

- The season was tough but unforgettable, Todt assures.

According to Todt there were very simple reasons behind Räikkönen's andFerrari's contract.

- Kimi is very talented and a fast driver. On top of that I like him as aperson too.

- During my career I have worked with many Finnish drivers and they areundoubtly talented but they are also very sincere persons with no exceptions. They are straightforward just like Kimi, Todt states.

He says that he knows that Räikkönen gets critisism from time to time becausehe is too silent.

- I don't want people who babble too much. It's much more important how theybehave at work and Kimi has been an important part of Ferrari's team. I alsobelieve that Kimi has good experiences from Ferrari.

According to Todt Räikkönen and Massaadjusted well to the situation and although both of them wanted to win theystill respected each other.

Todt knows that Räikkönen had a tough job filling the void that Schumacherleft.

- Motorsporting is a difficult genre because only a good driver or a good carisn't enough. It takes a car, team and a driver to achieve the best possibleresult. When Michael retired we knew that Kimi was up to the task. In return wehad to be ready to help Kimi in the same way, Todt says.

- A competitive and reliable car is a central factor in that job, he reminds.

- Still the car's reliability wasn't all the time on the level I would havewished for, Todt sums up.

Räikkönen was on Ferrari's radar for years before he became their driver. Todtsays he heard about Räikkönen already in the beginning of 2000 when Kimi wasmaking his way to F1.

- Peter Sauber told me about Kimi when he was hiring him to his team. Kimineeded the super licence back then and many were suspicious over it. I heard alot of good about him and when he tested Sauber on Mugello-track Ferrari wasthe engine-supplier. Of course we also saw that he was a very talented driver, Todtsays.

According to Todt the solution of Kimi coming to Ferrari happened at the righttime.

- Now all things were in order, Todt says.

They call Kimi the Iceman. How does he fit into Ferrari's red scenery?

- Outside the team it might look like Kimi and Ferrari are different. Howeverthe team's employees are very dedicated to their job and they want to do theireverything for success. Of course the driver also has an important role becausehis doings have a big impact on the engineers' decisions and the whole team'sspirit. The endresult is also mainly in the hands of the driver since he isdriver the car.

- The driver's nationality has no significance. His attitude and mentality hasa much more important affect of the whole. A driver has to be able to walk inthe same direction with the team. Kimi has fulfilled all these criteriasexcellently, Todt praises.

He also reminds of the team's role in getting a driver adjusted. According tohim it's crucial that the team knows the driver's habits.

- I think that Kimi and the team got quickly on the same wave lenght and bothenjoyed their co-work.

- A driver can learn new things every day. Many think that they already knoweverything but you can always do better.

- Kimi concentrates thoroughly on his work. He wants to succeed and he has themotivation for it. Kimi is also a regular guy in the way he is not always happywith the situation. The team supports him in every way and the results havebeen good, Todt says.

According to him Räikkönen didn't complain even once about trivial mattersduring 2007.

- It's in his nature. He has the courage to open his mouth in the right placeand he doesn't express his opinion for no reason.

- It's easy to get along with Kimi. He says things straight and he concentrateson the essential. He can say yes or no depending upon the situation. The teambenefits from it because his answer is always clear and the team doesn't haveto try and figure what he is talking about.

- Michael, Felipe and Kimi are all different personalities and unique persons.

- When Michael made his decision we already had an option for this situation. We didn't wait until he announced his decision. We had negotiated with Kimi along time ago and made a three-year contract with him to the end of season2009. He has also said that he wants to end his career at Ferrari, Todt says.

- It was expected because F1 is followed everywhere. Publicity is part or thepicture. There are more media-channels and you can film anywhere withcellphones. That's why the drivers also have to be careful when they are inpublic. Often wrong interpretations of situations are made and there should beno room for them. One can influence that with their own actions, Todt says.

- A certain kind of carefulness is important.

Todt tells that he has talked with Kimi about the media-publicity just likethey have talked about other things too.

- Kimi is wise in this thing too. He knows that his private life is not thesame as others have. It's part of his job and part of him driving in Ferrari. On top of that they follow even more closely what a WDC does, Todt reminds.

Räikkönen and Todt have already learned to know each other outside races andtesting.
Kimi

- We have discussed a few times at dinner in Maranello for example. Kimi ismodest but sometimes he wants to have fun. It's only a good and normal thingfor a young guy his age.

Räikkönen said before season 2008 inSkyItaly'stv-interview that he feels like a shy small boy at times.

- I believe him, Todt says.

According to Todt Räikkönen's career has changed into an easier one after theWDC.

- He has achived his goal. When he started in Sauber and continued in McLarenhe was a couple times close to winning the WDC. It didn't happen until he wentto Ferrari. I'm sure he tries to become WDC again but the first time is alwaysspecial.

- The club of world champions is very small and the members are in a certainway different than others. I think that the WDC makes his life even moreenjoyable. However he still wants to race and challenge others. One day he willdecide to retire. We have to remember that he will still be a young man who hasa lot of opportunities in front of him. His contract guarantees him a securedfuture, Todt says in the end.

My interview with Jean Todt is over. We shake hands and I leave the room. Whentaking one last glance at the room I see that Todt is looking at the papers onhis desk. The stories about his enthusiasm for working are easy to believe.

We walk to Colajanni's office where we exchange a few words about Räikkönen.

Colajanni is in a close contact with Räikkönen in races and outside of them.

- I am pleased when I get to work with Kimi. His attitude towards his work isvery professional and he estimates things in a clear way. We trust each other,Colajanni tells.

- Of course Kimi isn't the most talkative driver in front of the media but thatis not a problem. We also communicate very economically and don't blabber aboutanything unimportant. Ferrari is always in the spotlight so we have to be verycareful in what we say.

- In this sense there are no problems with Kimi. The media sometimes tries toget out things about him that aren't real. Kimi's strenght is that he doesn'tpretend to be anyone else than himself, Colajanni says.

An atmosphere of success is all around Maranello. When I walk back to thereception a group of happily chatting men come out of one door. They are buyersof a Ferrari who have just been on a factory-tour. Outside the factory I seemany Ferrari-employees wearing red overalls, they are on their lunch hour. Mostof them seem to eat in a restaurant that is right next to the factory.

I go to Ferrari's shop and spend easily one hour there. After that I have atrain trip to Milanwhere I will meet another pillar of the Italian motorsport.
