These scenes were filmed by a photographer during a whale-watching expedition in California’s famous Monterey Bay earlier this week.
The footage was posted on the Facebook page of Monterey Bay Whale Watch, with an explanation of what had been witnessed during a morning adventure aboard the SeaWolf II.
Describing the video, the whale watchers said: “We saw about 25 individuals and we have footage of them feeding on a sevengill shark!
"These whales are typically smaller in size than the Bigg's or transient killer whale type and they had several very young calves with them.
The footage was captured by Slater Moore Photography after a drone dispatched and soared over the pod.
The photographer wrote on Facebook: “Offshore killer whales today - such an awesome encounter. So Lucky to get to see this!"
Broadnose sevengill sharks can grow up to 8ft long and weigh 550lb.
They are known to be aggressive and human remains were once found in a specimen’s stomach.
There have been at least six attacks on humans, the last in New Zealand three years ago.
Shark experts say the species is feisty towards humans in both public aquariums and in the wild. Divers should always be wary of the species, they warn.
