早期历史
The Bavarians emerged in a region north of the Alps,previously inhabited by Celts, which had been part of the Roman provinces of Raetiaand Noricum. The Bavarians spoke Old High German but, unlike other Germanicgroups, probably did not migrate from elsewhere. Rather, they seem to havecoalesced out of other groups left behind by Roman withdrawal late in the 5thcentury. These peoples may have included the Celtic Boii, some remaining Romans,Marcomanni, Allemanni, Quadi, Thuringians, Goths, Scirians, Rugians, Heruli.The name "Bavarian" ("Baiuvarii") means "Men ofBaia" which may indicate Bohemia, the homeland of the Celtic Boii andlater of the Marcomanni. They first appear in written sources circa 520. A 17thcentury Jewish chronicler David Solomon Ganz, citing Cyriacus Spangenberg,claimed that the diocese was named after an ancient Bohemian king, Boiia, inthe 14th century BCE.

领地初立
The Bavarians soon came under the dominion of the Franks,probably without a serious struggle. The Franks regarded this border area as abuffer zone against peoples to the east, such as the Avars and the Slavs, andas a source of manpower for the army. Sometime around 550 AD they put it underthe administration of a duke - possibly Frankish or possibly chosen fromamongst the local leading families - who was supposed to act as a regionalgovernor for the Frankish king. The first duke known was Garibald I, a memberof the powerful Agilolfing family. This was the beginning of a series ofAgilolfing dukes that was to last until 788 AD.

The death in 514 of "Theodo dux Baioariæ" isrecorded in the <Excerpta Altahensia>.
Theodo I had one child:
1. THEODO (?-after520). He succeeded his father in 514 asTHEODO IIDuke of Bavaria. The succession in 514 of "Theodo filius eius [=Theodo dux Baioariæ]"is recorded in the <Excerpta Altahensia>. <The Annales Ducum Bavariæ>record that the Roman army was defeated by "Theodone secundo" atOettingen in 520.

The were a noble family that ruled the Duchy of Bavariaon behalf of their Merovingian suzerains from about 550 until 788. A cadetbranch of the Agilolfings also ruled the Kingdom of the Lombards intermittentlyfrom 616 to 712. They are mentioned as the leading dynasty in the <LexBaiuvariorum> (c. 743). Their Bavarian residence was at Regensburg.
The dynasty's eponymous ancestor is Agilulf(Proto-Germanic Agilwulfaz), a semi-legendary prince of the Suebi anddescendant of Hermeric, the 5th-century Suevic king of Galicia, possiblyidentical with one Agilulf, a steward of the Visigothic king Theoderic II, whowas executed in 457.

The first duke identified with the Agilofing line inGerman historiography is Garibald I (Gariwald). However, doubt has been cast onGaribald's membership in the Agilofing family in modern scholarship, whichmakes Tassilo I (r. 591–610) the first ascertained member of the dynasty.
