以下内容摘录自The Career Within You这本书。

(Authenticity)

Only the shallow know themselves.

—Oscar Wilde

If you are a Romantic, the emotional depth you bring to your work shows in the outer world as your inability to accept a cheap substitute.

Your insightful comments show you have thought profoundly about your work. You shun light chitchat as too superficial, preferring to engage in significant matters, and you strive to find fresh ways of expression. Having you on the staff or in a social gathering adds a sense of gravitas.

Many Romantics appreciate the value of the unconscious rather than always trying to reason things out to get to the truth. As ministers and psychologists, they can also discern information and feelings on an intuitive level. Kate, a pastoral counselor, worked with a woman who was suffering from insomnia. Kate encouraged her to scrawl in a journal whatever came to mind in the middle of the night. The woman did that a couple of nights and discovered much of value she hadn’t known was on her mind. Opening herself up this way, she was able to alleviate stress and begin to sleep better and feel better.

(Compassion)

Whether your job description calls for it or not, co-workers will value you for conveying compassion when a caring tone is needed. Since you are the person many of us would want to go to in a crisis for understanding or for dealing with a difficult situation, management would do well to appoint you to bring the news about layoffs or other hardships.

You maintain a strong heart connection because your rich internal life helps you share others’ emotional experiences. Medical professional Isabel felt such compassion and suffering for her patients that it was sometimes hard to hold back her tears. Betty was able to drink in the aesthetic experiences of her Romantic friend and intuit his feelings when he faced death from AIDS. He wanted to live as he was dying, and he wanted her to meet him on an emotional level. When he was near death, he needed nursing care, he needed to be hugged, and he needed honesty—and she could do that too. She could talk about death, which most of his other friends were unable to do.

Hilde always helps blind people trying to cross the street and brings home stray animals from work. She’s so sensitive, she used to cry watching Greenpeace commercials, and she gets depressed by the news.

(Creativity)

If you are a Romantic, you will probably be inventive in either practical or imaginative assignments. Matthew is creative in a down-to-earth way. One morning he woke up full of energy and enthusiasm for remodeling his bathroom. He’d make it the most beautiful and functional room in his house. Overtaken by this flash of inspiration, he finished in almost no time at all. Jesse uses the combined imagination of a whole group for her best creative work in product development. Her favorite time is starting off a meeting with a blank piece of paper and beginning the process of bouncing ideas off one another.

(Interpreting Meaning)

Romantics who are especially gifted at interpreting meaning include orchestra conductors, mediators, and theater critics. In business, they may take a complex technical system and translate it for the sales force to understand by adding attractive visuals and putting the subject on a more accessible level.

Catherine was good at writing hand books because of her ability to empathize with the readers and make her writing understood. She turned to novels to show how people could lead lives that had more meaning than self-gratification. Her characters would start out being self-centered but in the end would learn that charitable actions not only help others but also influence those around them to be generous and aware of those in need. Meanwhile, she created meaning through the art itself.

When Kate worked in a cemetery, she helped people understand the choices they were making. She would explain the difference between having a memorial or a bronze plaque. Should they put Grandpa in the ground? Would it be okay to put him in a triple grave or a double grave? She would interpret what the symbolism meant. “I’d help them understand what they’d be giving and receiving.”

(Dauntlessness)

Some of you are dauntless. Your courage can inspire others, stir things up, and lead people where no one has gone before. You’ll quit your job or change careers if something does not fit your values, and you’ll speak up if the subject means enough to you. The risk-taking actions you perform may come at key turning points in your career, accompanying your momentous breakthroughs. A bold move can seem necessary in order to claim your identity, express the truth, or facilitate a compassionate act.

Since Tiffany is drawn to drama, life and death, joy and grief, and to the macabre, unusual, and offbeat, she has no problem working in crime-scene cleanup or in a mortuary. She doesn’t want to keep the realities of life hidden. Elgar, too, has an interest in the offbeat. Owing to their unusual palette of ink colors, his posters were singled out among many submissions to be printed in a lovely coffee-table art book. He had carefully culled his palette from hundreds of photos of real suicide and murder victims in varying stages of decay. He sampled the colors of their putrefying flesh and wove them into cheery posters.

Romantics never plod through life or shy away from intensity. Some might face danger or even death working in a country undergoing a revolution if it means making the world a better place. Allan faced dangers when he performed acts of compassion around the world: “I worked in countries where people were being killed and had to think fast or I might be killed myself. I have also worked with tribal people who have AIDS.”

The following composer/pianist, dancer, and actor have all taken professional risks in their quests for self-expression.

(Diva Attitude)

You may experience a roller-coaster of contrasting feelings and attitudes about yourself, including sometimes feeling entitled. Loki said, “It’s a shameful indulgence, but my confidence was based on my sense of being better than those around me, so that I would stand out for being good at what I do.”

J.T. admits he can be a bit of a diva when doing something creative: “I feel like I am always the most talented and best actor in the plays I am in. I know the best way to do everything, and I get annoyed when the director goes off on a stupid tangent that has nothing to do with the show. I am less of a diva when I have a good director or am surrounded by quality people. When something magical happens and everyone is clicking, I focus less on being the most gifted here and more on creative aspects that are getting fulfilled.”

(Envy)

Romantics are familiar with the all-consuming experience of feeling resentful from wanting what another has. Haythorp is tall and handsome and is a brilliant, top-notch speaker on science. The ladies all puff themselves up when he enters the room. He has what Evan wants, and Evan hates him for it.

Loki envies a former good friend who sometimes outshined him in performing music. Unfortunately, their friendship suffered when they compared themselves to each other. Loki wishes they could get past their egos and help each other by collaborating.

A mathematician acquaintance set out to solve the most difficult problem Helga had ever seen. She had thought she could prove this theorem after just a little more preparation, but this guy seemed to have so much more innate talent than she that she realized no training would ever compensate for it. Their mutual friends were in awe of his abilities, but she found herself seething with negative emotion.

(Longing)

As a Romantic, you may sometimes lament that something you had in the past is missing from your life. This longing can take you away from the here and now and hinder you from staying on task.

J.T. feels as though he’s been getting stuck with stage directors who don’t know what they’re doing…or if he were in a different play things would be better…or perhaps he should have taken that other role several months ago or…

(Melancholy)

Dark moods are not uncommon for Romantics. They may feel attached to a sad feeling that stops short of depression, a mood often referred to as “sweet melancholy.” Some are also prone to serious forms of depression.

Here are some job preferences that Romantics express. Do their perspectives sound familiar?

“I prefer working side by side at my job, or I tend to get depressed.”

“I easily absorb moods. When I realized how much I could be brought down by those around me, I found different people to interact with.”

“I feel melancholy when things can’t move forward, so I chose working for myself, which I control.”

The hardest thing about being a Romantic, to some, is the feeling of being on the outside looking in—as if they are not living their “true” life. But Romantics who are engaged in their work feel that their life has meaning.

As a Romantic, you may find that slipping into a bit of melancholy is not necessarily a bad thing for you. You may enjoy this emotion or feel that something creative is coming out of it. But the people you work with may experience melancholy as negative or too depressing. There are cases in corporate America where melancholy Romantics were pushed out of the company because they were misunderstood as “drama queens” or “bad apples.” Talking about the negatives at work gave their bosses the often-erroneous impression that they were not committed to solving problems.

(Self-Doubt and Shame)

As a Romantic, you may find that sometimes your self-esteem plummets so low it seems things will never go your way.

For example, at a meeting Annabel started talking to a man who turned out not to be who she thought he was—a case of mistaken identity. Instantly she felt ashamed, even though she realized that mistakes like this happen to everyone. Similarly, if anybody at work got cranky or if anything went wrong, Hai would feel it was his fault even though usually it wasn’t. Many Romantics have a tendency to feel they have let somebody down or have not done a good job—that they could have done more or should have done less.

Julianne used to get depressed when she heard about peers who were doing so much with their lives. She would wonder if she had neglected to develop her talents in design, music, dance, and acting. Then one day she said to herself, “Why can’t I do that when I see others seizing the opportunity?” So she started a program of taking classes, going to psychotherapy, and exploring new careers.
