而实际上，此后的神圣罗马皇帝，确实也是愈来愈无聊乏味。
因为虽然已经有了《金玺诏书》，但说到底依然是谁拳头大谁有理。德意志诸邦中体量最大的波希米亚国王，一直到后来出身波希米亚系的哈布斯堡家族（House of Habsburg）几乎垄断了其后所有的神圣罗马帝国皇帝称号。而那个所谓的选帝流程，简直就成了脱了裤子放屁——不仅多余还讨人厌。换个角度讲，欧洲人在中世纪，就已经把无病呻吟的程序正义这一套，玩到了极致。
仅此而已。
这样的无聊游戏，一直持续到了公元1804年。这一年，风头正盛的法兰西第一共和国元首拿破仑（Napoléon Bonaparte）自行宣布为皇帝，并同时宣布法国为法兰西帝国，也就是历史上所说的法兰西第一帝国（First French Empire）。
