I might just have found the character for my next film.
Driving across the plains last night my spotlight caught a pair of eyes in the distance walking towards me. The road veered away and then round towards the hyaena. At first I laughed when I saw the hyaena sliding its bum along the ground trying to get rid of those worms, just like a domestic dog does. But I was so wrong! I was witnessing the most amazing thing. This hyaena was walking on its 2 front legs! It was doing the impossible! Imagine your dog standing on its 2 front legs, then drawing its back legs forward and up off the ground. Just like it does when rubbing its bum on the ground, except with the back legs raised. Then actually walking just on those front legs. Not only does this require a lot of technique and balance, but also a huge amount of strength. And hyaenas do have a lot of strength in those forequarters. I was totally dumbstruck and amazed at the courage that this hyaena had to survive.
She headed on north for half a kilometer doing her power walk, only resting briefly once. When she stopped she stands on all 4 legs and seems fine, but as soon as she moves the back legs come up and she powers away looking like she’s sliding across the plains with this style that totally smoothens out her gait. Reaching a Mopanie tree, she sniffed around for a couple of minutes, turned round and headed back in the direction she had come. Already with just showing this bit of stamina I realized this wasn’t a new injury. Her right back foot is really swollen and the left leg seems dislocated near the base, but they do have different back legs to most other dog-like animals, so it’s hard to tell.
She maintained this gait hardly ever resting and not really seeming to get tired. Continuing south she arrived at the hyaena den. There were several hyaenas there. They got up with her arrival, although it might have been because of my arrival. The lame hyaena hobbled right up to them and then in a totally submissive mode she greeted them briefly, all of them totally dominating her. She was obviously a nothing here. Slowly I think I’m piecing together her puzzle.
Greetings over, only half a minute and she left now heading west. Reaching the Majale River she was now faced with a steep bank to descend. That was fine, she just seemed to slide down. I now had to tackle the same bank, but in my car. That was interesting and somehow I too slid down into the sandy riverbed. I didn’t want to lose her and was doing all I could to stay with her. She crossed the sand and now had a similar steep bank to ascend. How could she do this on 2 legs? She didn’t. Very very slowly she climbed the bank now using her back legs. She would ‘peg’ her back legs to the ground then reach forward with her front legs and use them to pull her forward. Then bringing the back legs up again to act as pegs. This was the first time I saw her using her back legs and it was obviously extremely painful. Up the bank and as if nothing had happened off she was gliding away out of sight. I now had my own dilemma. Descending a steep bank like that is easy, but climbing it becomes a serious 4x4 trick. I was up, my front wheels just getting traction on the top of the bank but it wasn’t enough and my back wheels were spinning. That was all fine, but now as I slid back down the bank towards the riverbed and I started sliding across into a fallen over tree on the river bank. This was no time to worry about cosmetics on my car and the body took a pounding crashing through the dead branches. Back in the riverbed, I was fine, car was fine except for a few scratches and dents, and off I went south looking for a place to cross. Eventually out the river I now had to find the hyaena. I passed several other hyaenas heading west. 2, 3, 4, 5 and more of them all heading west, but where was my girl? I eventually found her resting up at a waterhole. It wasn’t much of a rest and she was back sliding west with me following in awe at this determination to keep going. Then another gully, she went through but I couldn’t even get into it. I raced off in search for a place to cross making a huge detour and really worried I had now lost her, but luck was on my side and I picked her up again, still sliding.
More hyaenas up ahead, some giggling and others lying around. My hyaena stopped and listened. I switched off. All was quiet, but my hyaena seemed concerned. She stood there still looking west. The stillness was broken with hyaena chatter and giggling and then… a lion roared! My hyaena turned and headed north back across the dreaded donga. Driving around frantically I wasn’t able to locate her, but all around were hyaenas, some resting, some walking but not much going on. She must be in the area, but I wasn’t having any joy.
She had now covered 5 to 6kms in about 2hrs! What a champion! But now she had to contend with lions and in her state that has to be scary.
With more vocals from the lions, I found them on an elephant carcass about 500m away. They were battling to get into the carcass, but were keeping everybody else away, even though there’s enough food for all the reserves lions and hyaenas. The carcass was in a drainage line and wedged between mopanie bushes on one side a combretum on the other and somehow almost totally hiding this huge bulk of meat. The lions were taking turns chewing away at the trunk and mouth where the skin is a little easier to break in to.
The hyaenas weren’t getting a way in here, but had other problems to sort out. I had parked about 50m from the carcass in an open area when the commotion started. Hyaenas were growling, whooping, giggling and making all the strangest sounds all around me. As I watched in the moonlight hyaenas gathered to my east, about 15 of them spread out in a front walking towards me. Then suddenly they all rushed past me to the west only to come bolting back east with another 15 or so hyaenas pursuing them. I was witnessing 2 hyaena clans challenging each other. The sounds were absolutely amazing and went on for the rest of the night. I couldn’t get any shut eye because of this.
They kept challenging each other but never actually making contact, which is probably a good thing, as it would turn into a serious blood bath.
One of these challenges was going on again when I noticed a hyaena sliding her way in with the rest of the pack. She was also going in to challenge the rivals. Wow she’s balls…!
At dawn another challenge was mounted, this time from the western clan. The eastern clan took off leaving the female to slide her way out of trouble, but sliding wasn’t enough as the rivals closed the gap and if they caught her she was sure to get the hiding of her life. She realized her troubles and throwing all that pain aside, she put her back legs to work managing to avoid the oncoming masses. She left the area…
My thoughts on this hyaena – I think she was previously a high ranking female, if not the matriarch, in her clan and for some reason she was deposed. That’s what left her with these injuries and just lucky to be alive. I filmed a similar thing in my “Hyena Queen” film and her behaviours and injuries look so similar.
YOU MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO TO BELIEVE IT!
