只不过，奥托一世从此复活了一个消失已久的帝号，也建立了一套足以传承的加冕体制。凡是当选东法兰克国王的人，只有进军意大利加冕，才能够算得上是罗马皇帝。反之，则只能算是东法兰克国王。
然而，我们心中有数。
所谓法兰克的国王，如果在国王本人不强势的情况下，也不过就是一个虚号而已。本来四大公爵们中间推选的国王就已经很虚了，再加上一个更虚的皇帝帝号，能够撑得起这样的表里如一的贵族，其实也是凤毛麟角了。
奥托一世之后，有一个所谓的“奥托王朝”（Ottonian dynasty，根据属地原则，也叫萨克森王朝）；奥托王朝之后，又有一个所谓的“萨利安王朝”（Salian dynasty，根据属地原则，也叫法兰克尼亚王朝）。
说白了，就这个“帝国”而言，叫什么王朝并不重要。因为国王是贵族选举产生的，皇帝也必然是选举而来的。那么这样当选的皇帝，比当年的罗马帝国没有明确继承机制的元老院皇帝，让人感到更加不靠谱。
